Dining: The Loss of a Soul-Food Legend

Sylvia Woods, also known as the "Queen of Soul Food," passed away last week at the age of 86. For the uninitiated, Sylvia's Restaurant is a New York institution in Harlem that Woods opened in 1962, serving things like ribs, hot cakes, corn bread, and fried chicken. The tiny luncheonette started with six booths and 15 stools and, over time (with the help of some positive press), grew into a consistently packed restaurant that could seat 250 people. Now it's more or less synonymous with what people know as soul food. [Read More]

Woods was, from the beginning, a constant presence at her restaurant, warmly greeting customers and making sure all the food was served traditionally. Recalling a time Sylvia's tried to introduce new items to the menu, Woods told the Philadelphia Daily News, "We had lots of salads and stuff, and it went to waste. When people come here, they got in their mind what they want." For decades, Sylvia's has served people like Quincy Jones, Diana Ross, and Muhammad Ali "what they want," and thanks to Woods's legacy, it will likely continue to do so for a long time to come.
