News: The Huffington Post Passes NYTimes

How's this for a sign of the times? Boosted by its integration with AOL (and the AOL homepage and AOLNews.com, which now simply takes you to HuffingtonPost.com) The Huffington Post has now surpassed The New York Times in monthly unique viewers. The house Arianna built is getting 35.5 million uniques per month compared with The Grey Lady's 33.6 million uniques.
It marks something of a changing of the guard not only because the venerable nytimes.com is much older than HuffPo, but because the kind of original reporting the Times does has been struggling to hold on to an audience in a crowded field of hybrid news/entertainment sites and aggregators. The Times also recently erected a paywall, which has caused about a 10 percent dip in viewership according to the Times's David Carr.
